COCKTAIL GLOSSARY
History meets handcrafted throughout these century-old bank vaults beneath the
Cleveland Trust Rotunda. Amuse your senses and
heighten your knowledge as you read through the
glossary of historical relevance in regards to our cocktails.
The Corner of Euclid and Bourbon
The Cleveland Trust Building (The 9) sits at the
corner of Euclid and East 9th.
Pack’s Old Fashioned
Charles Lathrop Pack served as the agent and
purchaser of the buildings that used to sit at the
corner of Euclid and East 9th, before the
Cleveland Trust Building was constructed.
Millet’s Mural
Francis David Millet designed and painted the
murals within the Cleveland Trust Building,
completing them circa 1910. He later died in the
sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912.
Net Worth
Common banking term; value of all assets,
minus the total of all liabilities.
Cleveland Trust
Paying homage to the Cleveland Trust Company,
who were the first tenants within this building.
Butter & Egg Man
A ‘Butter & Egg Man’ was a slang term used in the
early 1900s to describe a big spender, a traveling
businessman in the habit of spending
large amounts of money.
The Short Ton
The below-ground floor of the
Cleveland Trust Building, and present-day Vault,
contained a 200-short-ton bank vault
with a 17-short-ton door. It was the
largest bank vault in Ohio in the early 1900s.
Boozehound Manhattan
Slang termed used in the 1920s; a person
who habitually drinks a great deal of whiskey.
Mosler’s Sazarac
The Mosler Safe Company was a manufacturer
of security equipment used within the vaults.
John’s Julep
John G.W. Cowles was the first president
of the Cleveland Trust Company.
Lake Shore Lemonade
As Cleveland Trust expanded shortly after they
opened their new headquarters in this building,
they acquired several banks, one of them being
Lake Shore Banking & Trust.
Post’s Peach
George B. Post designed the
Cleveland Trust building; he also designed
the New York Stock Exchange building.
Millionaire’s Row
A section of Euclid Avenue that was once home to
Cleveland’s elite, including John D. Rockefeller.
Iron Works
Iron Works and L. H. Miller Safe manufactured
the vault door outside of the main vault.
The Manager’s Office
The manager’s office within the vault area used to
sit right where the main bar sits present day.
Strawberry Titanic
Francis David Millet, who designed the
murals within the Rotunda building,
later died on the RMS Titanic.
Circa 1908
After several years of construction,
the Cleveland Trust Company occupied its new
headquarters on January 1, 1908.
Safe Deposit Box
Present-day Carnegie Vault used to be
home to the safe deposit boxes.
Renaissance Revival
At the time the building was completed,
the architectural style was described as
Renaissance Revival. However there have
been critics that have challenged this and
declared other architectural styles over the years.
Gin Fizz Guarantor
A Guarantor by definition is a party who agrees to
be responsible for the payment of another party’s
debts should that party default.
Royal Carnegie
The steel for the main vault was provided
by Carnegie Steel Company.
General Moses
Paying homage to the founder of Cleveland,
General Moses Cleaveland.
Stone Fruit Standard Oil
Standard Oil Co., was founded by
John D. Rockefeller, who is said to have had assets
within the vaults in the early 1900s.
The Dead Key
The Dead Key is a fiction book, that was inspired
by author D.M. Pulley’s structural survey of the
abandoned Cleveland Trust building circa 2001.
Steel Matcha
In the early 1900s, Cleveland ranked fifth
nationally in iron and steel production.
Miller’s Strawberry Mule
Iron Works and L. H. Miller Safe manufactured
the vault door outside of the main vault.
Gospel of Wealth
The Gospel of Wealth is an article that was written
by Andrew Carnegie, who founded Carnegie Steel
Company.The steel for the main vault was
provided by Carnegie Steel Company.
York Sunrise
York Safe & Lock Company was a
manufacturer of vault doors.
East 9th Street Margarita
The Cleveland Trust Building (The 9) sits
at the corner of Euclid and East 9th.
Lajoie’s Mezcal
Nap Lajoie played for the present-day Cleveland
Indians in the early 1900s. His popularity amongst
locals during the time led them to elect to change
the name of the ball club to the Cleveland Naps.
Gilded Gold Mai Tai
The Rotunda has numerous panels of stained lead
glass embedded into the gold gilt concrete frames.
Calvary’s Colada
Calvary Morris was the president of
Cleveland Trust at the time the new building
was opening in 1908.
Watermelon Marble
The marble floors within Vault are
the original floors from the opening of the
Cleveland Trust Building in 1908.
